Chegg Announces Large-Scale Layoffs as AI Competition Threatens Business Model
Tech and AI's Disruption Pushes Santa Clara-Based Ed-Tech Firm to Cut Jobs
Chegg, a well-known online education company headquartered in Santa Clara, recently revealed a second major workforce reduction this year, laying off 319 employees—a move affecting nearly 21% of its workforce. CEO Nathan Schultz explained the decision in light of increasing competition from advanced AI-powered educational tools, including Google's AI-based search summaries and ChatGPT, which students increasingly favor over traditional homework-assistance services like Chegg's.
As the education tech company pivots to cope with a rapidly shifting AI landscape, it faces several critical challenges. Schultz explained that AI search enhancements in Google—such as information summaries derived from sites like Chegg's—pose substantial competitive headwinds. According to Schultz, Google has transformed from a search engine to an "end destination," drawing users away from sites like Chegg. Furthermore, students see generative AI models like ChatGPT as affordable and effective alternatives for homework and study assistance.
The financial impacts on Chegg have been significant. According to its latest Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, Chegg reported a $212 million loss from July through September, bringing its total losses for the year to $830 million. The company's revenue has steadily declined over the last three years, and its stock value has plummeted from a pandemic peak near $12 billion to a mere $159 million.
Schultz also detailed Chegg's financial strategies for countering these challenges. The company anticipates saving between $60 and $70 million in 2025 by reducing operational costs through layoffs, following a similar workforce reduction of 441 employees earlier this year. Chegg is simultaneously exploring AI integration, forming an "arena" for assessing and incorporating AI models into its offerings to maintain relevance in the competitive market.
The competition between Chegg and AI tools underscores the broader disruption AI technologies bring to traditional industries. While Chegg's investments in AI signal efforts to adapt, the company faces mounting pressure to innovate rapidly in an industry increasingly dominated by AI-driven solutions.

Google Launches Gemini AI App for iPhone: Streamlining AI Access for iOS Users
A New Chatbot Companion for iOS Users
Google has introduced its Gemini AI app for iPhone, now downloadable worldwide. The app provides iOS users with Google’s chatbot experience, streamlining access with a straightforward chat window where users can input queries via text, voice, or camera. This dedicated app aims to increase Gemini's accessibility by putting the icon directly on iOS homescreens for quick access.
Gemini Live and Interactive Features
One standout feature in the Gemini app is Gemini Live—a dynamic chat mode that has been available on Android and is now accessible to iOS users. This mode offers real-time voice interactions similar to ChatGPT’s voice feature and even displays in the iPhone’s Dynamic Island and lock screen, enhancing accessibility.
Google’s App Ecosystem Advantage
While non-Siri chatbots face limitations on iOS in terms of system controls, Gemini integrates seamlessly with other Google apps. Users can ask Gemini to play music, which will automatically open YouTube Music, or to find directions, which opens Google Maps. This integration hints at Google's ambitions to create a more cohesive user experience across its ecosystem, with Gemini as a central interface.
Expanding Gemini’s Reach and Usability
The app’s primary aim is to cement its place on users' homescreens and build familiarity with Gemini's conversational abilities. By making the bot readily accessible, Google hopes to foster routine interactions, helping Gemini become a daily tool for information and productivity.
