Raspberry Pi and Sony Launch AI-Powered Camera Module for Developers
Raspberry Pi, in collaboration with Sony, has unveiled a new AI Camera module priced at $70. The camera uses Sony's IMX500 image sensor for onboard AI processing, allowing developers to create edge AI solutions that can process visual data without the need for extra accelerators or GPUs. Compatible with all Raspberry Pi single-board computers, the 12.3-megapixel camera can capture footage at 10fps with a 4056 x 3040 resolution, or 40fps at 2028 x 1520 resolution. It also features a manually adjustable focus and a 76-degree field of view.
This AI camera builds on Raspberry Pi’s previous camera modules, which lacked AI capabilities. According to Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton, this AI-powered upgrade opens new opportunities for developers working on applications requiring smart image processing, such as object detection, pattern recognition, and other machine learning tasks. It’s designed to support a wide range of AI-driven projects by leveraging the RP2040 microcontroller alongside Sony’s advanced image sensor, eliminating the need for external computational components like GPUs.
The camera's compact size, 25 x 24 x 11.9mm, makes it similar in dimensions to the Camera Module 3 that Raspberry Pi released in 2023, offering a sleek and familiar form factor for developers already using Raspberry Pi hardware. The camera's manual focus and wide field of view enhance its versatility, making it suitable for use in robotics, smart home systems, surveillance, and other AI applications that require efficient real-time image analysis.
The AI Camera module represents Raspberry Pi's continued evolution in the AI hardware space, reinforcing its commitment to providing affordable, accessible tools for the AI developer community. With its easy integration into existing Raspberry Pi systems, the AI camera lowers the barrier to entry for developers looking to implement AI-powered vision solutions, whether for hobbyist projects or more advanced commercial applications.

Sam Altman Predicts 'Superintelligent' AI Within a Few Thousand Days
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, predicts that superintelligent AI—machines surpassing human intelligence—could be realized within a few thousand days. In a recent blog post, Altman envisions AI revolutionizing areas like education and healthcare, while solving complex global issues such as climate change and space colonization. He emphasized the need for robust infrastructure to support this technological leap and warned of AI's potential risks if not properly managed. However, critics argue that such predictions are overhyped and unlikely to surpass human cognition.
